Linux Mint 9 offers new software manager, backup tool

The Linux Mint team has released the final version of Linux Mint 9 ("Isadora"), based on Ubuntu 10.04. Linux Mint 9 features a new software manager with 30,000 packages, a new backup tool, and menu and interface improvements, says the team.

The Isadora release follows up on Linux Mint 8 ("Helena"), which released an RC1 GNOME version in November, and a final KDE release in early February. (Based on Ubuntu 9.10 ("Karmic Koala"), Linux Mint 8 added improvements such as new OEM installation features, an option to ignore updates, and "menu places" that can be configured by users.)

Linux Mint 9 made its debut in a May release candidate (RC), which was based on the Ubuntu 10.04 ("Lucid Lynx") that had been released just the week before. Like the RC, this week's final version incorporates Linux kernel 2.6.32.11, the GNOME 2.30 desktop environment, and the Xorg 7.4 X Windows System.

As with Lucid Lynx, Isadora is claimed to boot much faster than earlier versions. Linux Mint 9 also borrows Ubuntu 10.04's long term support (LTS), offering three years of security updates, says the Mint team.

Mint 9 offers a new Software Manager that now features over 30,000 software packages, compared to 300 packages in the earlier version. Combining the original Software Manager with the GNOME App-Install and the new Ubuntu Software Centre, the new version supplies numerous visual improvements, as well as an APT daemon that lets users install software in the background, says the Mint team. Among other enhancements, users can now review applications directly from the Software Manager, and view user-written reviews from the Linux Mint Community Website.

The other key improvement is a new Backup Tool, which offers features like incremental backups, compression, and integrity checks, says the Mint team. Users can now identify installed software, save the selection as a list, and then restore the selection on a different computer or on a new version of Linux Mint, says the team.

In addition to the new Software Manager and Backup Tool, other major new Linux Mint 9 features are said to include:

• Menu improvements, including editable items, transparent menus, "start with favorites," and "add to" shortcuts
  
• Desktop settings enhancements, including the immediate application of changes
  
• Better look and feel, with new backgrounds, welcome screen, and update manager
  
• System improvements, including a Wubi-based Windows installer, "Husse" quotes, a USB creator, default software selection, local repository and Gnome-PPP, and apt hold/unhold/held commands
  
• Project changes, including the Community Website, CD and DVD versions, Community Editions, OEM installation disks, USA/Japan distributors disks, and 32 and 64-bit support

Droid 2 Teardown: 4 Findings

Unlike R2-D2, Motorola's Droid 2 is not a sentient being, so there's nothing cruel about iFixit's teardown of the latest Android phone.
As with most of these teardowns, looking at the Droid 2's insides doesn't reveal much more than the basic technical specs, but they're always good for a few nuggets of information. Here are the highlights of what iFixit found in its Droid 2 teardown:

Same Battery, More Juice

Like the original Droid, the Droid 2 uses a 1400 mAh lithium ion battery, but Motorola advertises 575 minutes of call time in the Droid 2, compared to 385 minutes in the first model. Obviously, Motorola made adjustments elsewhere in the phone to sip less power. The battery is removable, as it was in the first Droid.

New Keyboard May be Interchangeable

The Droid 2's keyboard is one of its biggest new features, with raised keys and a wider stance in lieu of the previous generation's directional pad. If you've upgraded, but actually like the old keyboard, you might be able to switch them, but iFixit hasn't tested that yet. For original Droid owners, the hunt is on for Droid 2 parts suppliers.

Where's the Death Grip?

The Droid 2's antenna is a gold strip appended to the speaker housing, which itself is placed at the bottom of the phone's top panel, under the screen. Given that you usually hold a phone by its back and sides, I'm guessing (unscientifically) that signal interference won't be a problem when holding the phone normally.

More of the Same

I don't know how the original Droid performed on speakerphone and external audio (at least one review gave high marks), but iFixit says the Droid 2's speaker is the same.
Speakers are unsung heroes in smartphones, so hopefully Motorola's sticking with a good thing. The Droid 2's screen is also the same as the original -- 3.7 inches, full WVGA with 854×480 resolution -- and although the camera looks similar, it records video at 30 frames per second, compared to the original's 24.

Will Apple TV Become iTV?

More speculation has surfaced about Apple TV, suggesting the next version of the set-top box will run iOS applications, have 720p HD video output, and be renamed iTV.

The newest rumors build on earlier reports that the next version of Apple TV would be similar in look and feel to the iPhone 4 and feature an A4 processor, 16GB of internal storage, access to online storage, and streaming video, and be priced at $99. The latest commentary is courtesy of gadget blog Engadget citing "trusted" anonymous sources.

Apple TV in HD?

Earlier rumors suggested the next iteration of Apple TV would feature HD video resolution as high as 1080i or 1080p, but now Engadget says the set-top box HD capability will max out at 720p. The weaker HD video capability is reportedly due to the A4 processor's inability to handle 1080 resolution output.

TV Apps

Riding off earlier reports the new Apple TV would run a version of iOS (the same operating system that powers the iPhone and iPad), Engadget claims the next-generation set-top box "will be getting apps." But it's unclear whether an iOS-based Apple TV could use iPhone and iPad apps currently available on iTunes or if third-party programs would have to be written specifically for Apple TV.

If these sources are correct, this would be a smart move on Apple's part since Google will launch an Apple TV competitor, Google TV, later this year. Google TV will be an Android-based software platform that attempts to merge the Web with your living room television. Google TV will also be capable of running third-party applications.

More FaceTime

If a revamped Apple TV does run applications, I have to wonder if Apple would preload the device with the company's new video chat program, FaceTime. Currently, FaceTime only runs on the iPhone 4, but when Apple introduced the new video calling standard CEO Steve Jobs said the company would ship "tens of millions" of FaceTime devices by the end of 2010. It's unlikely Apple would get to that number selling just iPhone 4 devices, so FaceTime capability on other Apple products such as Apple TV and the rumored new iPod Touch would make a lot of sense.

Using your TV for video chat may be uncommon right now, but that may be about to change. Earlier this year, for example, Panasonic and LG Electronics announced plans to include Skype software on its Internet-capable HDTVs.

Rumblings surrounding the future of Apple's self-professed "hobby" have been building up in recent months, and are likely to increase the closer we get to Apple's annual fall product launch event.

As for the suggestion that Apple TV may be getting a new name, it's worth noting that iTV was the original name for Apple' set-top box when it first announced the device in 2006.

Ubuntu 10.10 Alpha 3 now ready for download

Ubuntu is one of the most popular desktop Linux distributions around, and the folks at canonical tend to release a major update every 6 months or so. But if you just can’t wait until October to see what the newest release will build, you can download Ubuntu 10.10 Alpha 3 today. Just be careful. But the software repositories used by Linux distributions can be a bit difficult to navigate, and the new Ubuntu Software Centre is supposed to make it easier to find and install apps.

The Software Centre is divided into a number of categories including Games, Office, Internet, and Sound & Video. There’s also a section for featured apps and another for new apps. You can also hit the History tab to view all apps that have been installed, removed, or updated.

New Windows Shortcut zero-day exploit confirmed

Reports have been circulating for a few weeks about a new attack being targeted at certain Windows users that used USB memory sticks to propagate. More details have now emerged, including confirmation from Microsoft that a new flaw exists and is being exploited.

The attack uses specially crafted shortcut (.lnk) files, which trick Windows into running code of an attacker's choosing. Any Windows application that tries to display the shortcut's icon—including Explorer—will cause exploitation, so even the mere act of browsing a directory with the malicious shortcuts is sufficient for a system to be exploited. Analysis suggests that the shortcuts are not improperly formed; rather they depend on a flaw in the way that Windows handles shortcuts to Control Panel icons.

The first reports of the problem came last month from Belorussian security company VirusBlokAda. The company found systems infected with the flaw through infected USB keys. The keys use the flaw to install a rootkit to hide the shortcuts, dubbed Stuxnet, including kernel-mode drivers, and a malicious payload. The rootkit is itself noteworthy: the drivers it installs are signed. The certificate used to sign them belongs to Realtek, suggesting that somehow the attackers have access to Realtek's private key. The certificate used to sign the rootkit has now been revoked by Verisign.

The current in-the-wild attacks are using USB keys to distribute the shortcuts, but the attack could equally use network shares or local disks. The malware payload appears to be designed to specifically compromise the databases used by Siemens' SIMATIC WinCC software. WinCC is SCADA software, used to control and monitor industrial systems, found in manufacturing plants, power generation facilities, oil and gas refineries, and so on. Siemens' software uses hardcoded passwords, making attack particularly simple.

The best option for mitigating the flaw is to disable Windows' ability to show shortcuts' icons; details on how to do this are provided in Microsoft's security bulletin. However, this mitigation comes at some cost; it removes all the icons from the Start menu, for example, which is sure to be detrimental to usability. Disabling Autorun provides slight protection, as it prevents Explorer windows from opening automatically when a USB key or CD is inserted.

Malware has used USB keys to spread before, but generally has leveraged Windows' AutoRun capability to trick users into executing the malicious software automatically. Newer versions of Windows have reduced the functionality of AutoRun to try to prevent such attacks. This use of specially-crafted shortcuts, however, undermines that protection.

Though the flaw is not itself suitable for worm-like propagation, it nonetheless represents a substantial threat to Windows systems. Microsoft has not yet made any announcement of when a patch will become available; the next Patch Tuesday is not until August 10, but if the threat is deemed severe enough a patch could be released at any time. All currently supported versions of Windows are vulnerable, including Windows 7.

Microsoft doesn't list Windows 2000 or Windows XP Service Pack 2 as vulnerable, but this is because they are no longer supported—they are just as vulnerable as more recent versions, but will not receive a patch.

New virus targets industrial secrets

Siemens is warning customers of a new and highly sophisticated virus that targets the computers used to manage large-scale industrial control systems used by manufacturing and utility companies.

Siemens learned about the issue on July 14, Siemens Industry spokesman Michael Krampe said in an e-mail message Friday. "The company immediately assembled a team of experts to evaluate the situation. Siemens is taking all precautions to alert its customers to the potential risks of this virus," he said.

Security experts believe the virus appears to be the kind of threat they have worried about for years -- malicious software designed to infiltrate the systems used to run factories and parts of the critical infrastructure.

Some have worried that this type of virus could be used to take control of those systems, to disrupt operations or trigger a major accident, but experts say an early analysis of the code suggests it was probably designed to steal secrets from manufacturing plants and other industrial facilities.

"This has all the hallmarks of weaponized software, probably for espionage," said Jake Brodsky, an IT worker with a large utility, who asked that his company not be identified because he was not authorized to speak on its behalf.

Other industrial systems security experts agreed, saying the malicious software was written by a sophisticated and determined attacker. The software does not exploit a bug in the Siemens system to get onto a PC, but instead uses a previously undisclosed Windows bug to break into the system.

The virus targets Siemens management software called Simatic WinCC, which runs on the Windows operating system.

"Siemens is reaching out to its sales team and will also speak directly to its customers to explain the circumstances," Krampe said. "We are urging customers to carry out an active check of their computer systems with WinCC installations and use updated versions of antivirus software in addition to remaining vigilant about IT security in their production environments."

Late Friday, Microsoft issued a security advisory warning of the issue, saying it affects all versions of Windows, including its latest Windows 7 operating system. The company has seen the bug exploited only in limited, targeted attacks, Microsoft said.

The systems that run the Siemens software, called SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) systems, are typically not connected to the Internet for security reasons, but this virus spreads when an infected USB stick is inserted into a computer.

Once the USB device is plugged into the PC, the virus scans for a Siemens WinCC system or another USB device, according to Frank Boldewin, a security analyst with German IT service provider GAD, who has studied the code. It copies itself to any USB device it finds, but if it detects the Siemens software, it immediately tries to log in using a default password. Otherwise it does nothing, he said in an e-mail interview.

That technique may work, because SCADA systems are often badly configured, with default passwords unchanged, Boldewin said.

The virus was discovered last month by researchers with VirusBlokAda, a little-known antivirus firm based in Belarus, and reported Thursday by security blogger Brian Krebs.

To get around Windows systems that require digital signatures -- a common practice in SCADA environments -- the virus uses a digital signature assigned to semiconductor maker Realtek. The virus is triggered anytime a victim tries to view the contents of the USB stick. A technical description of the virus can be found here (pdf).

It's unclear how the authors of the virus were able to sign their code with Realtek's digital signature, but it may indicate that Realtek's encryption key has been compromised. The Taiwanese semiconductor maker could not be reached for comment Friday.

In many ways, the virus mimics proof-of-concept attacks that security researchers like Wesley McGrew have been developing in laboratories for years. The systems it targets are attractive to attackers because they can provide a treasure-trove of information about the factory or utility where they're used.

Whoever wrote the virus software may have been targeting a specific installation, said McGrew, founder of McGrew Security and a researcher at Mississippi State University. If the authors had wanted to break into as many computers as possible, rather than a specific target, they would have tried to exploit more popular SCADA management systems such as Wonderware or RSLogix, he said.

According to experts there are several reasons why someone might want to break a SCADA system "There may be money in it," McGrew said. "Maybe you take over a SCADA system and you hold it hostage for money."

Criminals could use the information from a manufacturer's WinCC system to learn how to counterfeit products, said Eric Byres, chief technology officer with security consultancy Byres Security. "This looks like a grade A case of focused IP-harvesting," he said. "This looks focused and real."
